This session will present the implementation of a large-scale geospatial database as a cloud based service. It serves geospatial data as semantic information using a REST based URL with an Xpath flavor. Geospatial databases are traditionally large and complex and have demanding index requirements. This service uses an open source schemaless database containing over 1 billion records to provide data on-demand to a range of client applications. I will explain why this system was built, how it has been implemented as a cloud based service and some of the benefits realised. The presentation will conclude with an example of one of the ways this service has been used, in Germany, to create innovative maps with significant educational benefits and helping to ensure that it's users will not be lost in the clouds. |
